Tour of Speyside
Saturday 19th August
27 cars gathered at Cairnie Hall near Huntly for 63 Car clubs second touring event. Competitors were met by a fine sunny morning.
The 150 mile event headed towards Drummuir then turned off over the Glack taking crews out near Dufftown. The cars now headed over the Cabrach taking the shortcut out towards Lumsden. The route then headed towards Ballater, Balmoral and Cockbridge before stopping at the Lecht for lunch.
As the route crossed into Morayshire heavy rain showers started to fall. Once through Tomintoul the crews headed through the great loop at Fodderletter then onwards to Glenlivet then up towards Dufftown but turning off and going over the Giants Chair. The rain was now even heavier as they went over to Mulben then the twisty ordiquish stretch. Through Fochabers towards Clochan then back via Aultmore, through Newmill then back to Cairnie via Garrowood.
Tony & Stuart Leese led the field away in the original Mini, followed by a trio of Triumph TRs used by Barry & Jamie Hoper, Lee & Lorna Robinson, Philip & Helen Hogben. Mark Knowles was again out in the Mini. Calum & Ricky Gauld were using a BMW bike engined Hillman IMP. Davie Calder and family enjoyed a good run in the Ford Sierra the front brakes working hard being an automatic!
The event attracted a range of classic and modern cars and most things in between! Including a Carver One driven by John Campbell – I had to google it too……
Mike & Gladys Bremner were using the freshly restored McRae series Impreza, the group A Rally icon was in good company with Ian Boyles & Linda Farley in the immaculate Lancia Delta. Ian Dey was using the clean Renault 21 Turbo. Fraser Cranna was in the immaculate Volvo 480. David Ross & George Kennedy was out in the MR2 the pair are regular run competitors but were met by some new territory as the route moved West. Euan Reed was using a BMW but equipped with a Nissan engine!
The event also attracted some fantastic modern cars. John & Deirdre Harrington in the Jaguar and Neil & Janice Todd in the Mercedes C63,John Johnston had to navigate himself round in the 911. Darren & Bruce McWhirter were using a gleaming BMW convertiable they had to spend the afternoon constantly roof up, roof down as the showers came!
Car club regulars included Colin Christie & Brian Henderson in the Suzuki Ignis Sport, Alan & Darren Scott Skoda Fabia VRS, Neil & Catriona Philip Audi TT, Keith Christie/Dianne Law PT Cruiser, Michael Law & Diane Dufftown had a battle with the newly acquired MGB GT sticking in overdrive which meant some challenge going up the Lecht.
Everyone loves an Escort and we were lucky to have two stunning examples. Steve McConachie in the MK2 Escort. Scott & Sarah Stephenson in the MK1. The MK1 received the competitor choice award as best presented car.
Ian Davidson was forced to head home after the Jaguar refused to run right and Ryan Taylor in his mini lost wipers and managed to battle the rain to get home.
